A common issue we find is an improperly installed float switch. Float switches are designed to turn a sump pump on or off at specific levels in the sump pit.

If the sump pit is too small or if wires aren’t kept neatly secured, the float movement can be limited. It is also possible for foreign objects or debris to restrict the float switch blocking it from moving freely. If the float switch is unable to fully invert, the pump won’t turn on allowing the water to rise and even overflow the pit. On the other hand, the pump won’t turn off if the float doesn’t fully drop. This may cause the pump to overheat and fail leaving the pump inoperable in the event that the water level rises again.
